Spaces That Spoke!

How Nanu's House and Mentor's Abode Forged the Path to My Architectural Destiny.

In the chaos of life, places and people weave impressions that quietly become part of our essence—shaping our style, cultural inclinations, and inspirations. Among these influential spaces, my nana’s house stands out like a cherished memory, even if my recollections are somewhat hazy.

Every detail etched in that home left a profound mark—from the rough stone exterior to the expansive dining space with collapsible grills and folding glass doors. The house, designed by the talented Ar. Bharat Patel (as per my uncle), welcomed with a double-height entrance, seamlessly connecting the central informal area, dining, and master bedroom. A visual journey unfolded with the staircase leading to bedrooms, a terrace, and a mysterious basement.

Nanu’s Place, Surat

This residence became the silent architect of my passion for the field. Little did I realize then that this place would sow the seeds for a career in architecture, a journey I now wholeheartedly cherish.

Another significant place etched in my heart is the abode of my mentor, Ar. Narendra Dengle. From my first encounter, it exuded a tranquillity that seamlessly blended with the curves and angles of its design. A lightweight structure in its time, the residence boasted an efficient layout ensuring natural light permeated every room. Practical circulation led from the office back route to an extendable dining space, offering picturesque views of the informal living within the columns.

The entrance through the foyer opened to a living area overlooking a water body, connecting to the parent's bedroom and a kitchen with subtle level differences. A central staircase, guided by a skylight, ascended to the master bedroom and office area. The other side revealed additional bedrooms and an activity area, adorned with a terrace overlooking lush greenery surrounding the compound wall. This home, painted with subtle hues, became a canvas of unique character.

Both these places, one rooted in familial history and the other under the architectural guidance of a mentor, became pivotal chapters in my architectural journey. They silently nurtured a passion that blossomed into my present!
